A digitally illustrated comic-esque picture book comprised of multiple people’s poems and short stories about personal experiences of life depicted through a collective of monster-like characters. My aim is to capture the subtleties of various relationship types and a glimpse into the daily lives, perspectives, and realities of others. I first designed the characters, then gathered the poems from friends and acquaintances, and finally attributed the characters to the poems based upon my preconceived ideas on the character’s relationship ties to one another and their personalities.

With such a short poem came more freedom to explore the visuals for this spread. These pages depict Melanie’s memories at the prime of her ballet career, until meeting Pierre, her “rain”. Without a clear chronological order, the illustrations become as ambiguous as the source poem.

Juliet

I illustrated this poem through Juliet’s perspective, as she comes home from a busy day at work to her wife, Zoë. Juliet feels complete and is surrounded by warmth and love at home, which accounts for my decision to fill the background with the warped, warm-toned, and fuzzy liminal space.

Juliet, a detective, “dealing with the case of a dangerous thug” at work

I tried my hand at a slightly angled fish-eye perspective for the door and Juliet

Rafael

Clara

Meeting someone on a first date can be nervewracking, and although the two hit it off, Rafael’s nerves get the best of him.
