The comic spread sets the story and background for an additional educational activity students complete after finishing the main storyline in Missions with Monty. This mini story follows a businessman, Mr. Henry, returning to his beautiful lush hometown, Cape Sapphire, after a long time away. Unfortunately, he arrives to find a smoggier and more developed city in place of the beaches and forests he fondly remembers — and the monarch butterflies with them! Dr. Tay, an old friend and biological scientist, helps him collect the data. Further illustrations to showcase graphs were designed to aid students in answering questions in association with why the monarch population is decreasing.

character exploration
I started this project by gathering some images of Mexican coastal cities and beaches that inspired Cape Sapphire. For Mr. Henry, I referenced some Mexican actors to portray the suave and kind businessman. During ideation, I knew I wanted Dr. Tay to be a darker-skinned woman with curly hair and glasses to better represent Mexico’s population. As I developed her character, I decided on a field researcher-esque outfit as opposed to the sweater.
